U16A Leinster Final Kilkenny v Wexford, Saturday 23 May 2009, Slieverue GAA Grounds

Kilkenny retained their u16A Leinster Title in sunny Slieverue following a hard fought victory over Wexford on Saturday and the team ended 2009 on a winning note.  Kilkenny got off to a good start with a point from Nicole Culleton.  Shannon Byrne responded, scoring 1-1 in the space of 2 minutes to leave Wexford ahead on a score-line of 1-1 to Kilkenny's 0-2.  Points from Sonia Buggy, and Nicole Culleton and a goal from a penalty by Claire Phelan kept Kilkenny in touch and at the break Wexford led by a point on a score-line of Wexford 1-5 to Kilkenny's 1-4.

Wexford started the second half with goals from Shannon Byrne and Tara Somers. However, Kilkenny responded with a goal from Noelle Maher and a point from substitute Ciara Holden.   On 47 minutes Kilkenny went ahead when Ciara Holden scored Kilkenny's third goal following good work by Aoife Murphy.  This left the score Kilkenny 3-6 to Wexford 3-5.  Points followed from Claire Phelan (2) and Ciara Holden which pushed Kilkenny ahead and gave them victory with the final score of Kilkenny 3-9 to Wexford 3-7.

The Wexford players pushed Kilkenny right to the end but they responded well and showed that they were not going to give up their Leinster crown without a fight.  Kilkenny had a number of good performances including Claire Phelan, Aoife Murphy, Ciara Holden and Noelle Maher. 

This was the u16 team's last match of the season and we congratulate all the players on retaining the U16A Leinster Championship.  The Kilkenny camogie county board would like to thank Slieverue G.A.A. Club for the use of their pitch and facilities.
