Disappointment as Duffy dream dies

All-Ireland senior camogie semi-final

Wexford 3-12

Kilkenny 1-11

By Michael O’Leary

Devastation is the only word to describe Kilkenny’s exit from the All-Ireland senior camogie championship as Anne Downey’s troops saw their hopes of lifting the O’Duffy Cup for the first time since 1994 whither away in the space of 90 seconds.

Not more than a puck of the sliothar separated the sides as Wexford led 0-11 to 0-9 at the end of the 46th minute.

However, goals from the lively duo of Katriona Parrock and Kate Kelly killed off Kilkenny hopes before Kate Kelly added a third goal late on.

However, Denise Gaule grabbed a consolation goal in injury-time, as Kilkenny fought to the bitter end but in truth they were chasing a lost cause long before then.

An evenly contested first-half saw Wexford lead 0-9 to 0-8 at the interval as the lead changed hands on 4 occassions.

Kilkenny began playing with a light breeze advantage and built up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead by the 9th minute with Michelle Quilty(2 45s), Anne Dalton(60 yard free) and Collette Dormer all on target.

Wexford responded and they outscored Kilkenny 0-5 to 0-1 over the next minutes mainly to the place ball striking of Ursula Jacob.

A flurry of scores came in the closing minutes of the first-half.

Firstly, Kilkenny added three consecutive points in the space of 70 seconds with Anna Farrell twice pointing from long range and Katie Power also on target.

However, the yellowbellies finished the half strongly as Jacob pointed three late frees to swing the initative back in the hands of the Slaneysiders as they led 0-9 to 0-8 at the interval.

Kilkenny enjoyed the greater possession during the third quarter, but they couldn’t translate that onto the scoreboard as they shot five wides during that period. All of them were scoreable chances.

They were still very much in contention trailing by just points inside the start of the final quarter, but their hopes were dashed emphatically and suddenly.

Kate Kelly and Katriona Parrock caused plenty of problems in the Kilkenny all afternoon and significantly they contributed 3-4 between them.

Kelly set the WIT freshers player of the tournament and her rifled was well saved by Catriona Ryan , but the pace of the sliothar had too much power and the sliothar trickled over the goalline.

The duo combined 90 seconds later, when Parrock turned provider on this occasion and Kelly sent an unstoppable shot past Ryan. 2-11 to 0-9. Game over.

Kilkenny battled away bravely, but it proved too much of a mountain to climb.

Kate Kelly’s second goal in the first minute of injury-time when sent a low speculative drive beyond Catriona Ryan added to Kilkenny misery’s before sub Denise Gaule pounced on Mags Darcy’s parry to put a better reflection on the scoreboard.

Despite the disappointment, the Kilkenny senior camogie team have made steady progress in 2010.

The forwards struggled badly as a unit, but significantly with the exception of Aoife Neary they’re all under-21 years of age, and the best is surely yet to come.

Catriona Ryan despite the disappointment of conceding three goals, saved Kilkenny on numerous occasions again.

Catherine Doherty was solid as usual at full-back subduing the threat of Ursula Jacob keeping her scoreless from play, while Leanne Fennelly despite doing very little training been injury affected in the run up to the semi-final, Lizzie Lyng who was superb and Anne Dalton also stood out, while 16-year-old Kelly Hamilton was lively when introduced.

Scorers: Wexford: Kate Kelly 2-3, Ursula Jacob 0-7(0-6 frees 0-1’45), Katriona Parrock 1-1, Josie Dwyer 0-1

Kilkenny: Michelle Quilty 0-4(0-2 frees 0-2 ‘45s), Denise Gaule 1-0, Anne Dalton (0-1 free), Katie Power + Anna Farrell 0-2 each, Collette Dormer 0-1

It was an enjoyable night had by all, with the medals being presented for the 4-in-a-row minor All-Ireland winning team plus their Leinster winning medals, along with provincial winning medals presented to under-14, under-16, and the All-Ireland senior finalists who successfully defeated Wexford in the final played down in Bunclody in December. It was an evening of entertainment capped with another glorious year for camogie in Kilkenny with All-Ireland senior hurling winning captain Michael Fennelly special guest for the evening.

Eilish Cantwell was named as Intermediate player of the year, while Denise Gaule crowned a memorable 2009 when she landed the Kilkenny minor camogie player of the year. It was the latest award added to her glittering collection, as she was also named O'Neill young camogie player of the year at the camogie allstars last November. Gaule was also highly instrumental in winning the player of the match award as she scored 2-4 in helping Kilkenny successfully complete 4-in-a-row in the All-Ireland minor final, while last March she was captain fantastic scoring 1-8 in inspiring St. Brigids(Callan) to defend the All-Ireland colleges title with victory over Portumna. Dalton crowned Camogie player of the year

Kilkenny senior camogie captain Anne Dalton was crowned Vodafone Camogie Player of the year at a ceremony held in the Westbury Hotel Dublin last Friday afternoon.

It crowned a magnificent year for the 21-year-old WIT legal studies student as she was also honored as an All-star for the first time last November.

Congratulating the St. Lachtains native on her Cumann Camogie na gaeltachta Joan O’Flynn was fulsome in her praise of the Kilkenny captain.

“While obviously disappointed at losing out to Cork in the senior All-Ireland final, Dalton performed magnificently throughout the year and is very much a deserving winner of the player of the year award award. She has achieved so much already for such a young player and to think she is just 21 years old with a great future, no doubt she will have plenty of great days ahead in future”.

The Threecastles native has already enjoyed a glittering career so far.

Twice a member of the WIT Ashbourne Cup winning team – featured at centre-back on this years winning team – Anne has also won three senior club All-Ireland medals along with her twin sister Mary, and she has also won a minor All-Ireland in 2006 and played a leading role in helping Kilkenny land their first National camogie league since 1993 when they overcame Galway in the 2008 final.

Kilkenny Players Win Five CAMOGIE ALL STARS
The Camogie All Star Awards in association with O'Neills were held on Saturday night in Citywest and Kilkenny came away with five Awards second only to All Ireland Champions Cork who won six.  Kilkenny's five awards reflected the improvement shown by the team in 2009 and all in all it was a good night for the black and amber.  Jacqui Frisby, Elaine Aylward, Anne Dalton and Katie Power won their first All-Star while Aoife Neary collected her second award in two years. Kilkenny had further reason to celebrate when the O'Neills Young Player of the Year award went to Denise Gaule.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Joan O'Flynn, President of the Camogie Association said, "The All Stars awards recognise the individual excellence and leadership of the leading camogie players this season. The Awards are a treasured keepsake as they signify the achievement of playing camogie to the highest standards.

We congratulate all the winners and the nominees on their achievements during 2009 and wish them well in 2010.

Gala All Ireland Senior Camogie Semi-Final
Congradulations Kilkenny
Kilkenny have qualified for the All Ireland Final on Sunday 13th Sept where they will play Cork after their tremendous win against Galway in the Senior Semi-Final played on Sat in Nowlan Park in front of a huge crowd. Kilkenny were pushed all the way and were 2 points down going into injury time, before Elaine Aylward intercepted a Galway move before handpassing the ball to the awaiting Marie O'Connor who duly dispatched the ball to the Galway net to put the Kittens a point to the good. Katie Power insured the victory with a pressure point deep into injury time. Well Done to Ann Downey, Paul Murphy, John Lonergan, Noel Ryan and James Maher for their hard work all through the year.

Gala All Ireland Minor A Camogie Final

KILKENNY'S five goals at Semple Stadium on Saturday helped them to an incredible four-in-a-row All Ireland minor camogie titles when they prevailed over Clare, 5-10 to 3-8. This was a repeat of the 2008 final, and while the Banner were stunned by the strength of the champions in the opening half when they struck for the five majors, the Clare girls fought back gamely. The Cats led 5-5 to 1-4 at the break with 'Player of the Match' Denise Gaule the driving force as they went on to produce arguably their best performance of the season. They led 1-1 before Gaule rifled home a goal from a free that almost dashed Clare's hopes there and then. Goals from Gaule (two), Claire Phelan (two) and Michelle Farrell put their side into an unassailable lead at the break, 5-5 to 1-4 and went on to win in fine fashion to claim the Sile Nic an Ultaigh cup for the 4th year in-a-row.

Kilkenny travelled to Semple Stadium today (Saturday) to take on Tipperary in the Gala Senior & Intermediate Camogie championships. The Senior team put in a trojan effort in both halfs of the game to come away with a famous victory. Anne Downey and Co, really had the girls battling for every ball which was great to see and as a result they went into the interval 3 points to the good 0-7 to 0-4. Kilkenny really neede to keep up the tempo in the second half and done so just after the break when Aoife Neary Picked up a ball on the sideline, took off on a solo run before handpassing the ball across the square to the waiting Michelle Quilty who rattled the ball to the roof of the net. Tipperary  fought right to the end and were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute leaving the cats with a nervous 6 minutes but the held their coll and finished well to leave final score Kilkenny 1-14 Tipperary 1-11. It was a great day for Kilkenny as it puts them a step closer to the All Ireland Semi-Final.

CONGRADULATIONS TO THE SENIOR TEAM AND MANAGEMENT

In the Intermedaite Kilkenny were out classed all over the field from the start, but it must be said that this is a new team and very young team in the building proess for the future. Tipperary finished the game wining by a whopping 20 points.

Kilkenny vs. Dublin, Saturday 1st AUGUST IN Ballyboden at 1.30pm
The Kilkenny senior team travel to Ballyboden on Saturday where they will play Dublin in their final round match of the 2009 championship.  Dublin are always difficult to beat and none more so than when they have home venue.  Dublin had a poor start to the championship but they ran Tipperary very close before finally succumbing to the premier county. Kilkenny defeated Tipperary in their first match of the championship and were unlucky to lose out to Cork in a rain soaked Nowlan Park.  A win on Saturday will put Kilkenny in a strong position to attain a place in the semi-finals which are due to take place on Saturday 15th August.  There are numerous computations as to who will qualify from this group but Cork with 2 victories are in the driving seat and a win this weekend for Kilkenny and Cork will put both team through. The Kilkenny team shows one change from the Cork match with Ann Marie Phelan lining out at number 11.  Kilkenny have worked hard during the championship and defensively they have given up few chances.  The forward line has shown that given the right ball they are capable of getting scores while the midfield has been the engine of the team throughout this campaign.
This team is a mix of youth and experience and we wish the panel and management every success on Saturday.
