Heartbreak for Thomastown girls

By Michael O’Leary

There was heartbreak for Thomastown Camogie girls who’s Feile adventure took an unusual twist. They were drawn in a tough group with Athenry and Ardrahan of Galway as well as Courcey Rovers of Cork. Thomastown’s first game against Athenry ended in a 2-3 to 1-3 defeat last Friday afternoon, before victories over Ardrahan 4-8 to 3-0 and Courcey Rovers 1-1 to 0-1 meant that Thomastown along with Courcey Rovers and Athenry were involved in a three-way tie at the top of the group.

Thomastown had topped the group on scoring difference, however an unusual situation occurred in that because the three teams finished level on points, they would all play each other in a round robin section with matches lasting 5 minutes a side. Following a draw against Courcey Rovers, Thomastown would have to defeat Athenry by at least two clear goals to maintain their Feile hopes alive.

Now scoring difference was becoming an issue when many people were dazzled by the confusion of teams finishing level in rthe first place. How and ever, Thomastown lived up to their target getting revenge for their earlier defeat by Athenry at the start of the competition, as they ran out 8 point winners.

A semi-final clash with St. Martins of Wexford beckoned, and Thomastown had the disadvantage of playing these extra games, that proved decisive.

Despite their best attempts, their Feile adventure was ended as they lost out 0-4 to 0-2. Cahir who were very impressive en route to the final easily won the decider 4-10 to 1-7.
